Rio Tinto Kennecott – Statement on staffing changes

January 28, 2014 – 4:00 p.m. MDT – Rio Tinto Kennecott update

Today, approximately 40 salaried Kennecott employees were notified that their roles have been impacted by Kennecott’s ongoing efforts to reduce operating costs as a result of the April 2013 landslide at the Bingham Canyon Mine.

Approximately two-thirds of the impacted employees were provided an opportunity to transfer to other areas within the operation, and one-third of the impacted employees were subject to layoff. To minimize employee impacts, an additional 30 salaried role reductions were achieved by eliminating vacant positions.

Employees that were impacted by layoff are eligible for severance in accordance with Rio Tinto’s policy and will also receive employee assistance.

It is always difficult when jobs are lost because of the direct impact it has on individuals and families. Kennecott is taking great care to reduce impacts to employees with the decisions being made. Kennecott continues to implement measures to improve efficiencies and reduce costs as the organization continues to recover from the impacts of the landslide.
