Kennecott informs West Jordan residents about sediment runoff to West Jordan drainage area

Some sediment material from the Barneys Canyon mining operation has migrated offsite to the drainage area owned by West Jordan City located west of Highway 111 and north of the Sycamores subdivision. Soil samples have confirmed that the sediment does contain elevated levels of arsenic above regulated recreational standards.

All applicable areas have been fenced to prevent exposure. Rio Tinto Kennecott has reported the situation to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and will continue to work with them to remediate impacted areas to protect health and safety.
